HIGHLIGHTS

  • Explore magnificent Taroko Gorge
  • Hike two amazing and varied-terrin trails with an experienced guide
  • Visit the seaside night market in chilled-out Hualien City
  • Catch shrimp in a mountain river and feast on a riverside BBQ beneath the stars
  • End the tour with an ocean swim or whiskey tasting

For most visitors, merely seeing the magnificence of Taroko Gorge from one of the many vantage points along the road is enough. This tour is for those looking to go deeper. We’ll begin with a trip down the coast, pausing for a rest beneath the dramatic cliffs for which the area is justly known before heading into Taroko Gorge for the first of two hikes. The Shakadang Trail is a relatively level 3KM round-trip hike that follows the river and offers impressive views at every turn. The Zhuilu Historic Trail (originally built by the Japanese military) is significantly more challenging, being both twice as long and requiring some serious climbing; at points you’ll find yourself looking down into the gorge far below. You’ll also experience an evening riverside shrimp BBQ on the river, two nights in 4-star hotel luxury, a trip to a chilled out night market in Hualien, and a few other surprises. Please note: **This tour requires both a reasonable degree of physical fitness, and may not be suited to those with a fear of heights. **Shimp catching and BBQ might be changed to shrimp fishing and Taiwanese cuisine dinner if the weather or river condition is not allowed to do the activities.

ITINERARY
  • Day 1:

    Taipei to Taroko Gorge

We'll meet you at your hotel and leave the city behind, heading down the beautiful east coast highway, passing windswept coast and dramatic cliffs along the way. Entering Taroko Gorge, we'll hit the Shakadang trail for the first hike of the tour. It’s an mostly level 3km hike, and you’ll be able to dip your feet into azure waters of the Shakadang river along the way. We’ll end the day with some shrimp fishing and a BBQ along the river before heading into Hualien to rest up in 4-star luxury.

  • Day 2:

Taroko Gorge - Zhuilu Historic Trail - Hualien Night Market

After breakfast, we’ll head deeper into Taroko Gorge, passing shrines and waterfalls along Taiwan’s most scenic road before beginning the second hike of the tour. Constructed by the Japanese, the Zhuilu historic trail is an intermediate level hike offering lots of climbing and an amazing view from the top. You’ll burn calories, but don’t worry - we’ll have a light lunch along the way and gorge on night market food after the hike is done.

  • Day 3:

    Taroko Gorge to Taipei

Though the hiking may be done, we’ll make the trip back to Taipei fun. After breakfast in Hualien, we’ll head back up the coast to Yilan. If the weather’s cool we’ll make a leisurely pit stop to tour and taste at the famous Kavalan Whiskey Distillery (whose single malt was named the world’s best at the 2015 World Whiskey Awards). If its warm, we’ll stop for a swim at beautiful Wai’ao beach. Afterwards, we’ll do a bit of sightseeing at Wushi harbor before bringing you home.

Taroko Gorge 3 Day Trip

My friends and I had a great time visiting Taroko Gorge on the MyTaiwanTour 3 day trip! The highlight of the trip was the Zhuilu Historic Trail. There were 5 of us in our group and wanted to visit Taroko Gorge while we were on vacation in Taiwan. Using MyTaiwanTour was very easy for us. They arranged our passes, picked us up, had a great hotel in a popular area in Hualien, and most importantly we had an excellent Tour Guide Claire who taught us a lot about Taiwan. She integrated well into our group of friends. I would recommend this tour to others who want a fun adventure trip without the hassle of planning. At Kavalan Distillery - this is probably the best place to get their whiskey, as it's hard to find elsewhere. The only parts that could use improvement were (1) communication about Shrimp Fishing and (2) the beach to watch surfers: We had no idea what was involved in shrimp fishing other than you may get wet. Your pants will get wet and bring a pair of water shoes as you will literally be wading in the river searching for shrimp at night. My friends and I had a little competition of who could catch the most, it's not as easy as you think! Also heading to the beach to see surfers could be removed from the itinerary, as all the other activities on the trip were more active sightseeing adventure, and this one is out of the way and not as exciting.

Spectacular!!!!!!

Spectacular!!!!!! Jhuilu old trail is a magnificent place. We walk along the precipice and the road is only 90cm width. Dangerous but a great challenge. You wouldn't know what you will see after going to next corners. And the beautiful view just wait for you when you just go ahead. Do not need to care about anything. Just relax yourself and enjoy your risk there. We had a lot of fun. Will definitely come back again.
