Taiwan's three great natural icons — in one unforgettable journey
Few itineraries in Taiwan can claim this sweep of landscape: marble gorges carved by ten thousand years of river and rain, a high-altitude lake ringed by temples and tribal villages, and a sacred mountain where ancient forests meet the clouds. This five-day private tour connects all three.
We begin at Taroko, driving directly from Taipei along the Pacific coastline before entering one of Asia's most spectacular national parks. Two days are spent in and around the gorge — hiking its canyon trails, crossing its famous highway over the spine of the island, and overnighting inside the park itself.
From there, the road climbs higher still, crossing the rooftop of Taiwan at Wuling Pass before descending into the calm of Sun Moon Lake. The final stretch takes us into the forests of Alishan, where a narrow-gauge railway threads through thousand-year-old cypress groves and mornings begin with sunrise above the clouds.
Throughout the journey, the pace is unhurried, but the landscape is not — from marble gorges and alpine passes to lakeside temples and cloud-wrapped forests, each day hands you something the last one couldn't have prepared you for.
⚠︎ Note on highway access: The Central Cross-Island Highway between Tianxiang and Guanyuan operates on a timed-release system with scheduled windows throughout the day. Your guide manages all timings accordingly. In rare cases of road closure due to weather or maintenance, MyTaiwanTour reserves the right to adjust the itinerary.
▴ The road to the rooftop of Taiwan — the Central Cross-Island Highway winds above the clouds at Hehuanshan.
▴ Where the mountains meet the Pacific — a moment at Qingshui Cliff on the Suhua Highway.
▴ The gateway to one of Asia's great gorges — the ornate arch marking the entrance to the Central Cross-Island Highway at Taroko.
▴ Sun Moon Lake on a clear morning — still water, forested hills, and the unhurried feeling that this place was made for.
▴ Threading through ancient cedar and cypress, the narrow-gauge Alishan Forest Railway is a journey worth taking slowly.
▴ First light at Alishan — the moment the sun clears the ridge and the sea of clouds comes alive below you.
▴ High-mountain oolong, poured slowly, at a private tea house perched above the Alishan forest.
ITINERARY
Day 1 / Day 1 / Taipei – Taroko Gorge
We set out from Taipei along the coastal highway, where the first landmark of the journey announces itself without warning: Qingshui Cliff, a wall of sheer marble rising over a thousand meters from the edge of the Pacific. It's a fitting overture. By midday, we reach Taroko National Park, and the scale of the gorge — its layered marble walls, its rushing river, its light — takes some adjustment. Lunch is at Silks Place Taroko's Meiuan Restaurant, set within the gorge. After lunch, we continue deeper into Tianxiang, the inner sanctum of the park, to explore its temples, trails, and canyon viewpoints at our own pace — whether on foot independently or with the hotel's guided options in the evening.
Day 2 / Day 2 / Taroko – Central Cross-Island Highway – Sun Moon Lake
An early departure takes us back through the gorge and onto the Central Cross-Island Highway — one of the most extraordinary roads in Asia. The highway climbs steadily from sea level through subtropical forest, past cascading waterfalls and sheer rock faces, until the landscape opens into the high alpine grasslands of the Hehuanshan range. At Wuling Pass (3,275 meters), we stop to take in the view from the highest point of any highway in Taiwan. The descent is equally dramatic, trading alpine peaks for the gentler hills of central Taiwan as we make our way to Sun Moon Lake. Check in by late afternoon; the evening is yours. Note: The Central Cross-Island Highway is subject to traffic control at multiple points. Timings are managed by your guide to align with official release windows.
Day 3 / Day 3 / Sun Moon Lake
A full day on the lake. We begin at Wenwu Temple, its grand terraces commanding panoramic views over the water, before boarding a pleasure boat from Ita Thao Wharf. The afternoon is given over to one of CNN Travel's top ten cycling routes in the world — the lakeside bike path that winds through forest and shoreline with the mountains reflected in the water alongside you. A quiet close to the day's most kinetic moments.
Day 4 / Day 4 / Sun Moon Lake – Tea Farm – Alishan
The mountain drive from Sun Moon Lake to Alishan follows the New Central Cross-Island Highway, climbing steadily through tea country. We stop at a high-mountain tea farm — a walk through the fields, a tasting, and the particular quiet of being surrounded by rows of tea trees at altitude. From there, we enter Alishan National Forest Recreation Area, check into the hotel, and take a late afternoon ride on the Alishan Forest Railway before the light fades.
Day 5 / Day 5 / Alishan – Taipei
Those who want it: a pre-dawn walk to catch the sunrise, the famous sea of clouds spreading below the ridge as the sky lightens. Breakfast at the hotel, then a morning in the forest — the ancient cypress trail, the giant tree groves, the particular stillness of old-growth forest. Lunch with a view at the Alishan House tea terrace. Before descending, linger over a final cup of high-mountain oolong at a tea house with views across the forest — a quiet close to five days in the mountains. Then we head back to Taipei.
